The council promised to look again at the proposals to charge for parking in Alton and Petersfield on Sundays when the scheme was introduced in April 2008. The review, which will be put before Cabinet on January 21, recommends that Sunday parking be made free in two Petersfield car parks - Festival Hall and Castle Yard. In Alton charges could be reduced to 40p all day in some Alton car parks and removed altogether in others. The council took into account, among other factors, the impact of Sunday charges on churchgoers, the effect on those enjoying recreational activities and residents who had no on- or off-street parking. For residents without off-street parking Cabinet will discuss a 50 per cent season ticket discount and a £25-a-year permit allowing them to park over night in some car parks. When the scheme was first introduced there were fears that motorists would have avoided the car parks in favour of residential roads. Analysis shows there has been no decline in overall use of the main EHDC car parks over the last nine months and no impact on traffic flow around the town. More cars are being parked on side streets but that is part of a long-term trend. The council considered Sunday has become a normal shopping day like any weekday and the car park's extensive use contributes to wear and tear and consequent maintenance costs. ...more info... including parking tarrifs. |
